Autumn is the best time to travel throughout Europe. The weather is still relatively warm and the scenery explodes in a series of spectacular colours. What’s more, the prices in autumn are often cheaper and the crowds are fewer!.
One of the best things about travelling in autumn is that you don’t need to plan in advance. If cheap late holidays are your thing, then autumn is your season for traveling. There’s no time of year better for a spontaneous getaway.
If colour is what you’re looking for, some of the greatest autumnal sceneries are located in the UK, with the Cairngorms and the Great Glen both offering stunning mountain scenery in vibrant reds, oranges and yellows.
Alternatively, if you fancy something a bit further, why not explore Central Europe’s baroque castles, which are especially stunning with autumnal colours. Throughout the Baltic States, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Poland, there are beautiful castles, however Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria is the most picturesque, especially in autumn.
If the beginning of the cold weather have put you into a summer withdrawal state, then travelling for some sunshine is an extremely tempting option. European towns and cities around the Mediterranean still have a warm temperature at this time of the year and, with the dropping price of flights, these destinations become the perfect option for sun lovers.
We recommend some of the outlying islands of Europe, they are excellent destinations for some late-season fun in the sun. For example, The Canary Islands enjoy temperatures over 25 C throughout October, so pack your things and and get yourself a tan in October!
THE TASTE OF THE GROUND
Throughout Europe, Autumn means time for harvest. Harvest time is also one of the best times of year to sample the freshest products – when it is straight off the vine, or from the ground. This can be one of the most interesting, as well as beautiful times of the year for the traveller to take in the culture of a destination. In Italy or France, a number of different vineyards allow you to help pick the harvest.
Autumn really has everything, from a beautiful scenery full of colours to fresh food, and most of all – low prices. What could be better than planning a spontaneous getaway to taste some wine straight from the vineyard? So stop thinking about autumn as a time for consolidation and preparation and start thinking about it as the beginning of an adventure.
